Drum sets
A beginner who is interested in learning to play drum
sets can do so, however the beginning drummer should be willing to patiently
follow a few steps, including:
• Play with drum sticks first – Before a person even sits
behind drum sets, he should play around with drum sticks for a while
first. They can be used on tables, desks, walls, stop signs, concrete,
etc. A person should simply get the feel for how drum sticks feel and
take notice of the different sounds they make when struck at different
levels on different objects.
• Use a practice pad – Before investing in complete drum
sets, one good way to start to learn to play the drum is to invest in
a practice pad. These pads are able to simulate the sound and bounce
a snare drum would make, however it is much less expensive than complete
drum sets are.
A person who practices on a practice pad runs less of a risk of tearing
up a drum set as he learns. Once the student is comfortable on practice
pads, he is ready to move along to the real thing.
• Learn about the techniques – There are different techniques
people use to play the drums. Probably the best for beginning drummers
is the high hat technique. This technique requires the drummer to be
able to keep a steady beat with the foot pedal while also playing the
cymbals by tapping heels.
This technique might take some practice, but it provides a solid base
for beginning drummers from which they can grow as they continue to
learn to play drum sets.
